Bone Density Scans

Hi

My new endo consultant says I need a Bone Density Scan.

Some questions:
- Is this common practice?
- it is a one-off scan, or do I need one every so often
- what results do they provide? I assume they will send to my GP, who has to forward to 3 consultants (please just dont ask why 3).

Hi MikeC

It's common to have bone density checks if you are short of LH and FSH, testosterone in men is important for bone health and similarly estrogen for women. Also a lot of AI people need scans to check that they are not over-replaced, I suspect DEXA scan is cheaper than a day-curve but only tells you after the damage is done.
Depending on the results you are likely to be on a 5 year recall cycle if it's osteopenia and 3 years for osteoporosis.
